MEKA’S STORY
Meka is the ultimate American success story. The son of a Nigerian father and American mother he grew up in economically challenged South Memphis. As a young man, he taught himself computer programming, which opened the world to him. Realizing how profoundly tech changed his life, he has devoted himself to creating pathways to careers in computer science education for people of color, starting in his beloved hometown. Today, the nonprofit he helped found in 2015, CodeCrew, has directly impacted more than 10,000 unique K-12 and adult students, and further impacted more than one million kids in Tennessee through advocacy for computer science education legislation. Lives have changed in Meka’s hometown and well beyond.
“While we started in Memphis, our gift to the nation is showing how to bring diversity to tech.”
A thoughtful and dynamic speaker, Meka brings his unique perspective and life prism to each audience. Tech, diversity, solving social issues through education and opportunities, these are topics Meka mines with insights that last well beyond the chicken dinner.
“We should all be asking ourselves ‘How will you think globally and act locally to leave your impact on your community, and thus the world, in a positive, meaningful, non-selfish way?’”
